I am nearly 5 years into Matrescence and oh how I wish I’d known about this earlier. Having a single word that encapsulates the messy-joyful rollercoaster that motherhood is, has been so comforting.

Our babies are our worlds so of course there is so much focus on the baby, but there needs to be even more attention on the Mama. 🙏🏻

We need to be supported, understood, validated and cared for along the way, otherwise we at some point, burn out.

Next time you meet a mum friend, ask them:

‘How is your Matrescence going?

Imagine what conversation could open up, and consequently the support that could occur.

There is not one corner we have not worked on and we are delighted with how it’s turned out. DURING - 2020 - 2025 full farmhouse renovation.

Messy. Dirty. Hard work.

Somehow we did this and our marriage survived. 😉😅

Tricky’s knowledge, skill & dedication to this project is extraordinary.

Living in chaos is exhausting, we had times of:

no bath/shower
no front door (entrance through the window)
no staircase (only ladders)
no water, heating, electricity
no roof (and then a summer storm came)

and lost passports, phones, wedding rings (and Tricky’s hair 😉) along the way!

We have compromised all other aspects of our lives to get to this point - love, good health, groovy music and family/friends have helped hugely along the way, thank you 🙏🏻

And finally it was worth it…stayed tuned for the AFTER.

Surprise visit from my Mum -

Learning to raise children is the biggest blessing and the biggest challenge in equal measure 🙏🏻

Doing it in a foreign country away from your family & friends where you’ve grown up adds another layer.

It was my choice to be here, fall in love here and we chose to raise our children here (I acknowledge that not everyone has this luxury.) However it doesn’t make new Mum life any easier when you are lacking familiar support and community.

SO, let’s be there more for eachother, new friends, local friends, build community and know that there are many of us in a similar position - let’s step up and do it for eachother.

Something that came up on our last Mama retreat was that ‘lazy mum days’ are okay, doing less is more. (Which I know, but was comforting to hear it being shared in a bigger group.)

Yesterday was raining and we didn’t leave the house. We played in the garden, danced, did sticker books, acro yoga, danced more, ate cold leftovers, crafted, updated the laundry and the day was done.

Everyone was happy, content and had space to go at their own pace.

But why do I still sometimes feel like I should have done more? Gone to the indoor soft play, visited an interactive museum, done ‘city vibes’ to offer more variety?!

Thank you mums for reminding me that the slow paced upbringing is just as fulfilling.

After sitting alone and eating our delicious co-created lunch in silence, our group of 13 Mamas shared some ‘Mum Hacks’ with the group.

Raising children is truly such a blessing, but managing ‘life’ alongside it can feel like a lot at times. Many of our mothers are expats so that adds another dynamic when family and lifetime friends are not nearby.

Here is what came up:
*talk kindly with yourself!
*slow cooker
*try not to take everything so seriously, laugh a bit more
*bring snacks. always.
*alone time
*read ‘non-violent communication’ - Marshall b. Rasenberg
*take a ‘lazy mum day’ - it’s okay
*talk + share! to friends, family, partner...the good, the bad, the ugly
* 1 load of washing every night
*simplify everything - Do the things you enjoy but bring the kids. Go to the lake, eat cheese & biscuits for lunch. Everyone will be ok!
*big batch cook
*the more gentle you are with yourself the more gentle you can be with your kids.
*plan week ahead - 1x week family meeting
*one pot meals on the stove at breakfast time. avoid the diner time cook & chaos. Just eat and clear the table.
*book holidays early to save money
*exercise
*‘shifts’ with dad - trading off days/having weekly ‘me’ time
*wine!
*thermomix for meal planning, get kids to help
*cleaner
*husband does 50% share of family admin
*kids making homemade pizza
*regularly scheduled babysitter
*joghurt maker
*mexican bean & rice bowls - easy!

We love to see what other mothers are doing - I’m feeling inspired and motivated to implement some of these.

Guest side ground floor is shaping up. ‘Small’ carpentry details to be completed, coupled with some soft furnishing tweaks and we’ll be ready for our guests. 🙏🏻

…it’s been a wild 3 years!

No bathroom
No floors
No staircase
No front door (access through window)
No heating
No water/electricity
Lots of 🐁!

Tricky lived on the construction site the whole time, myself and our little one moved out for 8 months to Saas Fee. (Experiencing ‘single’ working mum life.)

It’s been a lot, a huge challenge, but we always had love ❤️, support from friends & family and good health - the most important things 🙏🏻.

Having lived in/ through the renovation process, it makes the end results even more satisfying 🙏🏻 So proud of my prince and our family for getting through this stage ❤️

With the joy of welcoming a new member to our family shortly, we have of course set ourselves goals in this project that we have hoped to reach. We unfortunately haven’t met them all, as we have learnt throughout this project it all takes longer than we think, time frames are extended and that challenges the mental load when living in compromised conditions of a building site…

However, here are some AFTER’s & BEFORE’s of our side (South/ East) to mainly remind myself of what HAS been completed and reflect on how we have dedicated everything possible to making it to this stage.

We are so grateful to have had this opportunity and now we have a clean, dust/dirt/mould free, warm, organised space, finally with NO mice 🐁 ❌ , and natural/uplifting lighting- a true place to call home. 🙏🏻 Hard work does pay off and I could not be more proud of Tricky who has had this vision, determination and commitment to make this dream come true. 3x layers of battens, 3 x layers stone wool, electric tubes/fittings placed, plasterboard each side. And wire brushed dust/dirt off original beams that will stay visible. ✅

This will now completely separate our side to the guest side, giving each party their privacy. 👌🏻

Before it was an empty wasted space used as upstairs landing ‘storage’, very dark, low beams and an ideal place for stuff and dust to gather.

Once plastered with fresh white, coupled with natural light from new roof windows, this will lift the upstairs landing space on both sides completely. 🌟

As ever, continued to be amazed by the skill, knowledge and commitment Tricky brings to this project- my hero ❤️

34 weeks pregnant and finished the winter season teaching skiing 🤸🏼‍♂️

I have received many comments so far in this pregnancy:

‘Wow you are quite big already.’ (in second trimester)
‘Wow, you are tiny! Where are you hiding it?’ (in third trimester)

Insulted by a stranger passing on the street:
‘Very selfish, you are very selfish, we are so over populated.’

‘You aren’t still teaching are you?’

As well as ‘You look great/fabulous!’ - (which should be the only thing you tell a pregnant woman.)

With ski teaching I know my ability/capability and set perimeters around this - I loved teaching, working with the children and had a really successful winter.

Regarding the comments, I try to reframe and believe they come from a kind and caring place, but these subtle opinions are mostly unhelpful and can allow you to doubt yourself and the health of your baby.

Pregnancy is such a blessing, a true miracle that should only be cherished and celebrated. 🙏🏻

These comments are where the judgment of motherhood begins, already…

(It’s continues in soooo many ways….’Working mum, part-time working mum, stay at home working mum’- all the options are HARD work.)

So as I reflect on the above, I see this as a reminder to myself - we just need to cheer women on!

All we are doing is making decisions that WE think are the very best for ourselves and our children.

Keep having the confidence to do it your way, as YOU are the only one who can best judge how to navigate motherhood. And that will be THE best way. ❤️

The cowshed transformation:

So we started in August 2021…and 19 months later in Feb 2023 we have transformed this cowshed into a:

- downstairs toilet for our side
- a communal laundry/ drying room
- a downstairs bathroom, with rain shower for the guest side

The final floor will be laid next month, but for now it is a beautifully functional space, with just a few details to finish and we are delighted!

Introducing ‘Rudin Residence.’

Kat 🇬🇧 & Tricky🇨🇭

We have spent the last 6 years devoting ourselves to this ‘Rudin Residence’ project with a vision of creating a space to share.

The 300 year old farmhouse has only been used as a holiday home with very basic amenities, so Tricky and I have committed ourselves to renovating the space into two separate spaces, one for us to live in and the other to host guests. (Retreats & Airbnb)

Tricky studied to be a carpenter/joiner as a mature student for 3 years (2018-2021) to learn all the skills he needed to tackle a big renovation project like this. His dedication, precision, attention to detail and creativity, coupled with his training as an architect has propelled this project into a masterpiece beyond our exceptions.

I, (Kat) have committed to the assistant role, helping where I can and learning by doing - often tidying, sorting, going to the skip and living by the motto of ‘less is more’ whilst sorting out the generations worth of items that had gathered here over the years, alongside running the household and raising our young family.

There is not one area that we have not renovated, from a new roof and windows, to an efficient heating system, insulation throughout the house, utilising empty space, turning a cow shed into bathrooms and digging & landscaping the outside garden.

Roof windows - December 2022

‘Working with a view’

We installed 7 roof windows at the beginning of December. Opening up a sense of space and light in corners of the house that have never seen natural light- such an essential element to ones well being 🙏🏻

30th December- the snow had disappeared and we took our chance to finish off the job we had started, before the next snowfall. Tricky had to re cut and lay the tiles where the windows had been placed and I was on tidy up duty. 💪🏻

Heating-

On 21st December 2022 the house saw it’s first ever radiator and some areas of underfloor heating installed, which is now linked to a warm pump heating system.

Until then we’ve heated few key areas of the house with a fire wood stove, oil oven and electric heaters.

Since the summer we’ve had limited means of heating, we removed the oil tank so used just 2 electric heaters. And in December we received -10 degrees outside with lots of snow. This was challenging, we were cold, we wore our ski clothes inside but always knew that our heating was going to arrive on 21st December.

My thoughts are with people more than ever who will endure this winter, being cold. It’s really tough living in an unheated house, but we always had the reassurance that it would change, not everyone has that hope…

Sometimes the ‘small’ things have the biggest impact- we will never take the ‘basic need’ of heating for granted again. 🙏🏻

These pictures show the space we cleared out, (most no longer served us so went to the skip), the concrete floor and new ceiling Tricky made, to have the space for the plumber to set up the heating/hot water system for both sides of the house. A big milestone for us complete 💪🏻

Our bedroom: Before 2017/ After Christmas 2022

Still some final touches to complete but at the end of last year we completed:

Floor & ceiling - newly placed & reinforced

Walls- insulated with 14cm sheeps wool, steam break layer placed, then wood cladded or plaster-boarded, then plastered.

Electrics- all replaced and newly wired, before there was one socket.

Radiator- heating installed, before there was no heating.

Windows- newly replaced.

We have had temporary, compromised sleeping arrangements since we arrived.

The process to get here was really challenging for us, but now my gratitude could not be greater to have the simple luxury of a comfortable bed to sleep on, heating, a warm insulted room (without mice) and a wardrobe.

The boys completed ceiling battens (which cladding will be attached to) and electrics in the cowshed and us girls battled with a lot of dirt/dust, clearing space, junk/rubbish/stuff in other areas of the house so we can now work in those spaces. We filled 3 bags of rubbish, recycled, and gave items away… another reminder that less is more, a cluttered house = cluttered mind.

• 🐭 Low point waking up to a mouse eating my coconut oil face cream beside our mattress!
• Mattress on floor, wardrobe in boxes/suitcases (for the last 6 months)
• Now, today, empty! (7.11.22)

We’ve got 4 weeks to give this space electrics, heating/radiators, insulation & plasterboard/wood cladding walls, a door and ceiling that goes up to the roof. Let’s do this!

Determined to make this a cosy space before winter really kicks in.

Tricky has removed 3/4 of the floors of the whole house, closed gaps with concrete, laid 3-layered strong boards before putting the original floor boards on top. And then in this case has insulated with stone or sheep wool from below, followed by plasterboard. Going to be a cosy winter 👌🏻
